Cover-Ups
Transform old, faded, or regrettable tattoos into fresh artwork you'll love. Our artists specialize in designing custom pieces that completely conceal your existing ink.
A cover-up is more than hiding an old tattoo. It's a second chance at getting the artwork you actually want on your skin. At American Tattoo Company, our artists have spent years mastering the techniques needed to turn unwanted ink into something you'll be proud to show off. We work with faded pieces, outdated designs, names from past relationships, poorly executed work from other shops, and anything else you'd rather not see anymore.
The process starts with a consultation. Bring in photos of your existing tattoo from multiple angles in good lighting. Our artists will assess the size, color density, and placement to determine what's possible. Dark ink requires different strategies than light colors. Heavy saturation limits options differently than sparse linework. We'll be honest about what we can cover and what might need laser lightening first.
Design takes longer for cover-ups than fresh tattoos. Your artist needs to create something that works with the shape and darkness of what's already there while matching your style preferences. Expect multiple revision rounds. We often use darker colors, larger scale, and strategic placement of dense elements like flowers, animals, or geometric patterns to mask the old work. The goal is a cohesive piece where no one would guess there's anything underneath.
Cover-up appointments run longer than standard sessions. Your artist is working over scar tissue and existing pigment, which means more passes and careful attention to saturation. Healing follows the same aftercare as any tattoo, but the covered area might feel more sensitive. Touch-ups are common. Sometimes the old ink ghosts through and needs another pass once everything settles.
Not every tattoo can be covered in one session. Very dark pieces, large areas of solid black, or tattoos with heavy scarring might need laser removal first to lighten the canvas. We can refer you to trusted removal specialists in the Houston area if that's the best path forward. Some clients do partial removal to give us more design flexibility.
Schedule your cover-up consultation at our Spring location off Interstate 45. We'll walk you through realistic options and timeline. Bring reference images of styles you like. The more we understand what you want, the better we can design something that erases the past and gives you art worth keeping.

Cover-Ups — FAQ
How much does a cover-up cost?
Cover-ups cost more than similar-sized new tattoos because they require more design time, longer sessions, and advanced technique. Pricing depends on the size and darkness of your existing tattoo and the complexity of the new design. We'll give you an accurate quote after your consultation.
Can any tattoo be covered?
Most tattoos can be covered, but very dark or heavily saturated pieces might need laser lightening first. Small, light tattoos are easiest to cover. Large areas of solid black require creative solutions or partial removal. Your consultation will determine what's realistic for your specific piece.
How long does a cover-up take?
Design takes 1-2 weeks after your consultation. The actual tattoo session depends on size. Small cover-ups might finish in 2-3 hours. Larger pieces could need multiple sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart for proper healing between appointments.
Will the old tattoo show through?
A well-executed cover-up should completely hide the original tattoo. In rare cases, very dark ink might ghost through slightly after healing and need a touch-up. Your artist will design the new piece with enough coverage and contrast to ensure the old work disappears.
